Different foods have different antioxidants and phytochemicals which help protect against oxidation preventing certain diseases like heart disease or cancer and also help maintain proper function and maintenance of organs and cells.
The color of the food often distinguishes the antioxidant or phytochemical. Lycopene contributes to the red pigment in tomatoes and beta carotene, a precursor to vitamin A is found in orange foods like carrots, pumpkib, sweet potatoes and cantaloupe.
So get on making your plate as colorful as possible! (:
